Sunday School is an integral part to our children's faith formation. It lays a strong foundation to a person's education as a Christian, an education which is a life-long process.
The current structure of children's Sunday School includes four classes: Primary (Pre-K, K), Elementary (Grades 1-3) and Intermediate (Grades 4-6) and Youth (Grades 7-12.) Classes meet during the academic year on Sunday mornings after the 9 a.m. service and run concurrently with the Adult Forum (10:20-11:10 a.m.) As we aim to nurture the spiritual lives of the children, we also desire to provide a safe, clean, and happy Christian environment for the youngest members of our church family. All teachers and leaders of children and youth have attended a diocesan training session called "Safeguarding God's Children." This year the Sunday School program will be using the newly-revised Episcopal Children's Curriculum (ECC) and the Episcopal Curriculum for Youth (ECY). ECC and ECY are built on scripture, the Book of Common Prayer, the Hymnal 1982, church history and tradition. The curriculum is designed to follow the overall biblical narrative in ways understood by young students. But the mere presence of Biblical material does not mark the curriculum as distinctively Episcopal. As all Christians do, we look to Holy Scripture for the content of our faith and practice. ECC and ECY are also liturgically-oriented, based on the three-year cycle of the Eucharistic Lectionary (appointed readings) and the seasons of the church year. Through the curriculum, our children and youth are invited, in a deep and personal way, to encounter God's word and to hear it at whatever level of understanding they have. It also calls us to imaginatively engage in the process of spiritual formation through offering activities that pay particular attention to multiple learning styles. We hope you will come learn with us on Sunday mornings!
