This summer, we look at two of the MDG’s:
Each year, 11 million children –1200 children per hour – die before they reach age five. In low-income countries, one in ten children meet this fate. Most of these deaths result from easily preventable or treatable causes. Mothers in undeveloped countries also face grave health risks. In Africa, a mother’s lifetime risk of dying from pregnancy or childbirth is 1 in 22; in Asia, it is 1 in 120 (in developed countries, the risk is 1 in 7300). Access to basic health care and education can radically improve these statistics. Across the globe and in our own community, there are many opportunities to get involved with organizations that strive toward these goals. In 2008, our companion diocese of Brasilia started a program called “Saúde para Todos” (‘Health for Everyone’) aimed at helping people in their communities address their own health issues. Trinity supports our local free medical clinic, Volunteers in Medicine, through Outreach Grant awards. And this year, our Lenten Blanket Project established our first connection with the Healthy Families Initiative at The Villages, Monroe County. This program provides prenatal and family counseling and education to low-income families of children up to age 5. Learn more: Visit www.globalhealth.org to learn about challenges facing women’s reproductive health, and www.savethechildren.org to find about children. Become an Advocate: At www.covertheuninsured.org, you can find up-to-date information about medical insurance gaps in Indiana, as well as several suggestions for becoming an advocate on this issue. Contact Senators Lugar and Bayh, as well as your Congressman, to ensure they know that federal funding for WIC (Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children – provides food, education and health referrals to low-income mothers and children) should be a priority. Donate: Give to international programs supporting maternal and child health, such as those at Episcopal Relief and Development or World Vision, or to local programs, such as Volunteers in Medicine (in partnership with Southern Indiana Pediatrics), that provide the basic health care that can make a critical difference to mothers and young children.
