This month, we focus on Millennium Goal #6: Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases. Malaria causes over 300 million acute illnesses each year, and at least 1 million deaths annually. This disease kills one African child every 30 seconds, and often leaves survivors with learning disabilities or brain damage. 40% of the world’s population (mostly in poorer countries) are at risk of contracting malaria. There are 42 million people worldwide currently living with HIV/AIDS. 8,000 die of it each day. It is expected that by 2010, there will be 20 million children in Africa who have lost at least one parent to this disease. Here at Trinity, we have supported healthcare (preventive and otherwise) through grant support of Volunteers in Medicine, which provides medical care to uninsured people in our area. We provide support for people living with HIV/AIDS through our Christmas gift program for members of Positive Link. In our companion diocese of Brasilia, the church is in the beginning stages of establishing its Casa A+, a project to provide room and board to those in the state of Tocantins who have come to its capital, Palmas, for treatment of HIV/AIDS. What can you do?Learn: visit www.globalaidsalliance.org, www.rollbackmalaria.org, or www.stoptb.org, to find out about the global efforts against these critical diseases.Donate: Support programs of Episcopal Relief and Development that fight disease throughout the world. In our own community, Positive Link (supported in part by private donations through the Bloomington Hospital Foundation) provides HIV/AIDS prevention and testing, as well as coordinated care to those with this illness. Volunteers in Medicine provides healthcare to the uninsured of our community. Get Involved: Educate yourself about healthcare reform efforts underway in Congress. Several nonpartisan websites provide legislative summaries of pending bills (some examples: www.familiesusa.org; www.covertheinsured.org). Contact Senators Lugar and Bayh, and your Congressional representative to share your views, and ensure that your family and friends understand the facts about the changes being considered.
